Handle Household Incidents


Prepare and inspect first-aid kit

·         First-aid kit is inspected to ensure there are adequate supplies in acc- ordance to standards

·         Missing first-aid items are replenished and unavailable first-aid items are reported

·         Minimal contact with first-aid items is observed and hands are washed using proper hand washing techniques

Handle external bleeding and carry out wound care

·         Pressure is applied over wound using hand or thumb and a clean gauze/pad to stop bleedings

·         If wound is caused by puncture, puncture is remove, blood is squeezed out and wound is placed under running water for two minutes before applying dressing

·         Hygiene is strictly observed in a manner that hands are washed, gloves are used and clean first-aid times are used on wound

Handle nose bleedinge

·         Household member is assisted to relocate to a place when he/she is seated

·         Appropriate pressure is applied on nostril to stop bleeding

·         A clean wet cloth is placed over nose to constrict blood vessels to stop bleeding

Handle minor burns and scalds

·         Burn or scald is placed under cold running water for at least five minutes

·         Approved antiseptic or appropriate medication is applied to burn or scald where applicable. Instructions on medicine are read before usage

·         Burn or scald is covered with sterilized gauze or bandage

Handle slip and fall

·         Household member is assisted to relocate to a place where he/she can sit or lie down in a gentle manner

·         If household member complains of severe pain, he/she is asked to stay stationary and reassured that medical help is on the way. Medical help is arranged immediately

·         If household member is unconscious, ambulance is called immediately

·         Household member is advised to see a doctor for all cases of slip and fall. Assistance is provided to escort household member to clinic where applicable

Handle vomit and diarrhea

·         Household member who vomits or suffers from diarrhea is advised to seek medical help immediately. Assistance is provided to escort household member to clinic where applicable

·         Household member who vomits due to intoxication is seated in an airy place and no food or drink is given

·         All vomit and diarrhea emissions are cleaned up immediately using appropriate methods and vomit and diarrhea emissions are disposed of properly

·         Warm water is given to household member. Household member is advised to seek medical help and advised against self-ingestion of medicine, milk or beverages

Handle choking for conscious household member

·         Object is coughed out by encouraging household member to do it himself/herself; applying appropriate first-aid methods using back slaps, chest thrusts or abdominal thrusts

·         Household member who vomits due to intoxication is seated in an airy place and no food or drink is given

·         If household member becomes unconscious, appropriate personnel is informed immediately for further action to be taken

Handle chemical contact

·         Eyes or skin in contact with hazardous chemical is washed under running water for five minutes using appropriate methods and medical assistance is sought after washing

·         Clothing in contact with chemical is washed immediately

Reinstate work area

·         Used first-aid items are replenished

·         Minimal contact with first-aid items is observed and hands are washed using proper hand washing techniques after preparing and inspecting first-aid kit
